How to Choose a Bridle For Your Horse

Do you want to choose a bridle for your horse? Read on.

It’s critical that your tools and tack are in working order, and are a good fit for you and the horse.  Here is some great info on how to make sure your horse’s headstall is a proper fit.

Your horse’s comfort is of chief importance. An uncomfortable horse is often hard to manage and handle. Bridles, if improperly placed or chosen, can make your horse uncomfortable. Therefore, it is very important to choose a bridle wisely. The purpose of the bridle can be in various forms, which can either be for functional riding or for show. Therefore, you should know your real intentions for the bridle when you finally decide to make use of it.

Here are some tips on how to choose a Bridle for your horse:

Choose a Bridle: Material:

The type of material is vital. You must know the type that is most suitable for your purpose. Prices can also vary greatly depending on the material you choose. The most attractive type of material is real leather. However, it is expensive and involves a bit more of care and maintenance. The cheaper version would be made of nylon. It is stronger and entails easier care. It can’t be used in competitions though.

Synthetic leather offers the best of both types. It looks attractive but has the strength and low-maintenance characteristics of nylon. Whatever type you choose, make sure to look for quality of hardware. Leather and stitching must be first-rate. Softer leather is preferable because it is easier to control.

Choose a Bridle: The Price and The Look

Going with the trend might be ok but it actually offers nothing substantial aside from being stylish. It is best to choose the classic ones with the conventional style. They function excellently but for a significantly lower price.

If you want to look smart even with the classic bridle, make the color coordinate with the color of your saddle. Also, make it a point that the color of your bridle (and saddle) does not clash with the natural color of your horse.

Choose a Bridle: Weight and Thickness

Weight and thickness should be considered as well. A horse with a dainty head must be bridled with a finer material. Wider headed horses work fine with thicker materials.

Choose a Bridle: The Measurement

Measuring for the headstall should be done by gauging the mouth from corner to corner. The brow band is measured by measuring from just to the left of the left ear to just past the right ear or vice versa. Measuring for the nose band is done around the nose so that you can add two fingers under the bone that sticks out on your horse’s nose. It should be mentioned that the nose band can affect the bit action of the horse. Many horse riders prefer not using one.

Choose a Bridle: Special Recommendation

There are new painless kinds of bridles and they are practically bitless. Instead of generating pressure and pain in the horse’s sensitive mouths, this kind of bridle will nudge the horses over a larger area.

Bits are tricky. It is imperative that they fit right. It is very common to use 5 inch bits because they fit most horses. However, it is still best to be sure by measuring the width of your horse mouth. You can do it by measuring the area where the bit rests and then add a half inch allowance.
